Checking the backlash on a rack and pinion machine

Backlash affects lite sizes if the mesh is too loose. To check the backlash follow the steps below:

  • First turn the override of the machine down to 0% by following the Changing the speed of the machine document. This ensures the machine cannot move while under power.
  • With a dial indicator in place, push the end of the bridge with your hands back and forth. Use the dial indicator to measure the distance you can move the machine.
  • The backlash should be approximately 20 to 30 thousandths of an inch.
  • Do this for both X-axis pinions and the Y-axis pinion.
  • Adjust if necessary.
