Exchanging a HIWIN magnetic scale system

Parts required:

1 Pc. Magnetic band and protective band adhesive

1 Pc. Industrial cleaner spray can (must be bought locally cannot be shipped)

1 Pc. Acetone or other solvent (must be bought locally cannot be shipped)

1 Pc. 31-4016-6466 (Mounting roller tool for 20mm track) and/or 31-4016-6467 (Mounting roller tool for 25mm track)

Preparation before installing new scale:

Switch the machine off completely before carrying out the following steps:

   1. Remove a section of the stator magnets (preferably the ones at the ends of the table) and push the bridge over to the area of removed magnets (photo shown above). This will make bearing removal easier. Do not let the stator magnets stick to anything and be sure to lay/spread the magnets far apart from anything magnetic after removal.

2.Remove ONLY ONE linear bearing at a time. If you machine has 6 bearings on one side then you can remove two bearings but no more than this and STEP 1 MUST be used if removing two bearings at once!

   3. Once you have one linear bearing removed you can begin to remove the old or damaged protection band from magnetic band.

4.Remove the magnetic band from its mounting in the linear guide rail.

   5. Now put the bearing you took off back on and then remove the other bearing and continue removing the protection band and magnetic band.

6.Use industrial cleaner and rags to remove ALL residue glue from the linear guide rail (example shown below)

It is very important that all residue glue is removed from the guide rail before installing the new magnetic scale. The surface must be absolutely clean, dry and grease-free! This is the only way to ensure a reliable bond is obtained.

Installation new magnetic scale:
The magnetic scale and protective cover are already cut to size, you will have a few mm space on each end.

  • Remove the tape covering the glue on the back of the magnetic scale.

  • Start at the zero point end and continuously glue the magnetic scale onto the linear guide rail. Ensure that the magnetic tape is not compressed or over stretched.

  • Remove the tape covering the glue on the back of the protective cover tape.

  • Glue the protective cover tape onto the magnetic scale. Attention-If the tape has an edge with no glue (shown below in red box) then this edge must be the bottom edge when mounted!

  • Make sure that no bubbles form under the tape during gluing. Use the mounting roller to press the protective cover tape with a force of approx. 250 N/cm² onto the magnetic scale. This should be done only once and in one direction. The bond strengthens under pressure. The final strength is obtained after approx. 48 hours at room temperature (18°C).
